LG Unveils Second-Generation Super Multi Blue Drives

LG Electronics, a leading maker of consumer electronics, has reportedly announced its second-generation hybrid optical disk drives for personal computers (PCs). The novelties can read all four disk formats currently sold, including Blu-ray discs (BDs), CDs, DVDs and HD DVDs, which brings quite some value to end-users wishing to watch high-definition movies on their PCs.

The new drives in the Super Multi Blue family of LG are LG GGW-H20LI and LG GGC-H20LI. The former can read and record CDs, DVDs and BDs as well as read HD DVDs, whereas the latter supports recording on CDs and DVDs and reading all four types of discs. Both feature LightScribe technology that can create labels on optical discs.

It is interesting to note that LG GGW-H20LI and LG GGC-H20LI will cost $499 and $399, respectively, which is much closer to mainstream price-points at which customers will really start to get the novelties. Earlier Blu-ray disc burners could retail for about $1000, which did not allow them to become really popular. Meanwhile, the most affordable HD DVD drives for PCs from Toshiba cost approximately $250 in the U.S

Change DVD key and Game Region Code on Xbox360 (CPU key required)

However you should know the 'Key Vault' is encrypted with the per-xbox360 'CPU key', so that means this hack is only possible on Hypervisor exploitable Xbox360s (kernel 4532 and 4548) for now. You will of course also have to read/flash the Xbox360 flashchip (by desoldering it and read/flash it with programmer or for example use the versatile Infectus dev chip)

I successfully changed the DVD key and region code of a 360. So it's all confirmed.
As for landmarks and interweb fame. All I did towards this was to reverse the plaintext KV signature to figure out how to modify and resign the KV contents. And even this work was built on the efforts of other hackers. For example, I didn't locate the region code in the KV and a lot of the SHA1 and RC4 encryption code was reversed and documented by others way before I started looking at it. *If* the region code tests are successful, then the following people contributed *much more* to this achievement than me.

The following assumes you have the correct 1BL key and CPU key set in the flashtool.
1. Dump the NAND from the US 360 (528-bytes-per-page)
2. Open in the latest flashtool (v0.8) and click [extract]
3. Edit extracted KV.bin and change 16-bits at offset 0xB8 from 0x00FF to 0x02FE
4. Open in flashtool and click [patch], check the "patch keyvault" box and select the KV.bin modified in step 3
5. Click [OK] and choose output file
6. Flash output image back to the NAND of the US 360
7. Try an EU game or two.

My USA 360 just booted a PAL (non-regionfree) game. the region patching WORKS.

After a few months without a word on @live e-mail addresses, news have appeared a lot on the subject recently. At first, they were officially available without using any kind of trick, but it disappeared quickly. No more than a week after, however, a new unofficial way of getting the long-awaited addresses has just surfaced.

The trick is pretty simple this time, because it involves modifying the contents of the address bar to link to the @live.com address registration page:

1. Visit the hotmail subscription page
2. Choose the free account
3. In the address bar, find and change "hmnewuser.aspx" to "newuser.aspx"
4. Locate and delete "&hm=1" from the address bar
5. Hit enter, and enjoy your @live address!

Chiaki Murata's Xbox 360 design is now commonplace in living rooms around the world. But back in 2003, the system was still just in the conceptual stages. Now, the Japanese industrial designer has released some great images of a couple of his original design concepts that didn't make it.
I’ve never seen a picture of this first prototype, but I actually like it. Like the final version of the Xbox 360, the first prototype was all white. However, it featured a glossy, pillow-like square case design, with a large glowing green “X” on the side.

Microsoft expects to deliver the near-final test release of its Silverlight alternative to Flash before July is over, according to a blog posting from a Microsoft technical evangelist.

Microsoft officially unveiled the beta of Silverlight 1.0 at its Mix ‘07 conference in April. The company also announced at that time the availability of an alpha of Silverlight 1.1, which adds a built-in Common Language Runtime engine, plus support for ASP.Net Ajax, Language-Integrated Query (LINQ), JavaScript, Visual Basic, C#, Python and Ruby. (No update so far on the status of Silverlight 1.1.)

Silverlight is a Web browser plug-in for playing media files and displaying interactive Web applications that was formerly codenamed “Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere,” or WPF/E.

Tim Sneath, a Microsoft client platform technical evangelist, posted the update on Silverlight availability to his blog on July 13:

“In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be ready to publish the Release Candidate of Silverlight 1.0 to the web. We’re in the final stages of stabilization as we close in on launch; fixing the last few bugs, doing detailed security penetration testing work, resolving any remaining inconsistencies and completing the last fit and finish work.”

Huge squid washes up on beach

HOBART, Australia (AP) -- A squid as long as a bus and weighing 550 pounds washed up on an Australian beach, officials said Wednesday.

The giant squid was found by a beachcomber on the Australian island state of Tasmania.

"It is a whopper," said Genefor Walker-Smith, a zoologist who studies invertebrates at the Tasmanian Museum.

Giant squid live in waters off southern Australia and New Zealand -- where a half-ton colossus, believed to be the world's largest, was caught in February. They attract the sperm whales that feed on them.

The dead squid, measuring 3 feet across at its widest point and 26 feet from the tip of its body to the end of its tentacles, was found early Wednesday by a beachcomber at Ocean Beach on the island state of Tasmania's west coast, the museum said.

The squid was expected to be taken to the museum, where DNA and other scientific tests would be carried out before it is preserved and possibly put on public display.

For anyone thinking of a calamari feast, Walker-Smith said giant squid contain high levels of ammonia in their bodies as a buoyancy aid.

"It would not taste very nice at all," she said.

Microsoft files patent for possible taskbar replacement

“A method for managing windows in a display” would sound particularly familiar to every Windows user as “that strip at the bottom of the screen with the Start button and clock” or perhaps the more formal name, the taskbar. On July 12 the Patent Office processed a patent application from Microsoft filed on the 9th of February, 2006 of what appears to be a possible alternative for the decade-old taskbar we all know and cherish in Windows.

Time and time again, Windows enthusiasts have jumped on the idea of replacing the taskbar in the ‘next’ version of Windows as one of the most revolutionary user interface changes Microsoft can make. For Windows Vista (Longhorn), the center of attention was the sidebar before undergoing major feature-reduction surgery in 2005 - a lot of people fantasized about how the sidebar could become the taskbar replacement, however that soon worn-off.

Microsoft University in Bangalore, India For Computer Courses

Microsoft is setting up a university in Bangalore, the Silicon valley of India, to impart computer education.

Though Microsoft does fund education and research projects in many universities across the world, this Bangalore based university will be wholly owned by the software giant and it's first-ever independent educational venture in the world.

TOI says that the Microsoft university may train around 1,000 students and it may well be India's first run by a multinational company.

Microsoft has software development centers both in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Recently, they opened shop in Vancouver, Canada after failing to get more workers in their US office on H1-B visa. Maybe the Microsoft University campus in India may be another step in the same direction - train students as per requirements and then absorb the best of the lot.

Microsoft To Drop Xbox 360 Price?

Wedbush Morgan Securities expects Microsoft to drop the Xbox 360 price tonight at its E3 press conference. Prices cuts are expected to be $479 to $399 for the Elite, the Premium from $399 to $349 and the Core from $299 to $249.

Other analysts are also expecting a price drop on one or more SKUs, between $50 and $100. According to Pachter, Microsoft will be announcing the price drop at their Tuesday night E3 press conference. Shacknews will be covering the event live.

Manual Uninstallation of OEM BIOS Loader EMU (Vista Loader or SoftMod) Windows Vista Crack

If you have applied and installed software based OEM BIOS emulator which is of Emu Loader type such as Vista Loader 1.0 (vstladr of softmod.iso) and Vista Loader 2.0 (grldr), you may face the problem that your computer unable to boot up anymore. Unlike Paradox OEM BIOS Emulation Toolkit 1.0 (repacked by Pantheon) which is software based driver emulator, Vista Loader actually makes use of boot manager (GRUB or GRUB4DOS) which is the first thing computer loads during boot up process, hence considerably increase the risk to use the crack for Windows Vista activation. Luckily, the Vista Loaders come with a uninstaller script that can automatically uninstall the crack patch from the boot loader.
However, if you already unable to boot up and start the operating system on your computer, the uninstallation script will be useless as you can’t run it. That’s why users are encourage to try the bootable CD method to apply the Vista OEM BIOS Emu Loader before patching the crack into hard disk. If you’re in this situation without access to Windows desktop, here are a trick and hack that you can use to repair boot sector and possible MBR (master boot record) of your computer, so that Windows can be loaded again without reinstallation.

Trick to execute Uninstall.cmd of Vista Loader

Boot up the computer with Windows Vista installation DVD.
Choose Install.
At the screen where you’re asked to input product key, press Shift + F10 keyboard shortcut to trigger command prompt.
Change directory to the folder where Vista Loader 2.0 or softmod.rar or softmod.iso is extracted.
Execute uninstall command.

If you can still access Windows Vista, but for whatever reason such as decision to go genuine, you want to uninstall Vista Loader crack, but uninstall.cmd script fails to properly clean the crack, then you can use the following steps to manually uninstall the Vista Loader.

Manually uninstall Vista Loader 2.0 (grldr)

Click on Start button, select “All Programs” -> “Accessories”, right click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”. Then confirm any UAC security warning pop-ups.
Change directory to the date folder of Vista Loader 2.0.
Type the following commands in italic, pressing Enter after each line:
bootrest /nt60 d: (d: is to change to your boot volume of Windows Vista)
attrib d:\grldr -r -h -s (change the d: to your boot volume, to remove special attributes)
del d:\grldr (delete the softmod mod loader program)

Manually uninstall Vista Loader 1.0 (softmod)

Click on Start button, select “All Programs” -> “Accessories”, right click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator”. Then confirm any UAC security warning pop-ups.
Change directory to the date folder of softmod archive.
Type the following commands in italic, pressing Enter after each line:
mbr_rest /nt60 d: (change d: to the boot volume of Windows Vista, can also use bootrest command)
attrib d:\vstaldr -r -h -s (change the d: to your boot volume, to remove special attributes)
attrib d:\menu.lst -r -h -s
del d:\vstaldr (delete the softmod mod loader program)
del d:\menu.lst (delete the software mod loader config file)

Users can customize Windows Vista boot screen or boot logo to change the default boot logo that’s pretty boring and dull. However, it’s not easy to create a new and pretty high resolution image or picture to set as boot logo. To simplify the process, Development Dan has created a small utility Windows Vista Boot Logo Generator that makes the process to create the new color high resolution boot logos easy.

To use Windows Vista Boot Logo Generator, two images or works or art with different size need to be prepared, one in 800 x 600 resolution and another in 1024 x 768 resolution. Depending on your system screen resolution and graphics card capability, higher or lower resolution boot image will be used when you boot up your computer. Both needs to be saved as 24-bit BMP format picture files. The graphic files can be used set or convert to above format by using image manipulation tool such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Paint built-in in all Windows operating system.

To make the new boot logo screen file come up during Vista boot, copy the file to the following folder (depending on your Vista locale, you may need to place the file in different directory such as DE-DE for English Windows Vista with German MUI):

Microsoft Kills Windows and Office Validation Assistant Anti-Piracy Efforts

Microsoft's anti-piracy efforts will undertake a major overhauling. The Redmond company plans to take down both the Windows Validation Assistant and the Office Validation Assistant.
However, Microsoft is going to fill in the empty spaces left by the discontinuing of WVA and OVA with Windows Comparison Guide (WCG) and the Office Comparison Guide (OCG). Additionally there is also the Windows Genuine Advantage and Office Genuine Advantage that will survive the anti-piracy cancelled services. Still, this is not the end of the upgrades in store for the Microsoft anti-piracy programs. Feature updates and additions are also planned to be introduced.
"We're finally taking down both the Windows Validation Assistant and the Office Validation Assistant. The WVA was a prototype for WGA; it was the first tool launched that offered a web-based validation that could help find evidence that a copy wasn't genuine that otherwise might be hard for the average person to find (such as bad or leaked product keys, etc.) The good news is that we're replacing the WVA with the Windows Comparison Guide (WCG) and the Office Comparison Guide (OCG). These guides offer much of the same functionality as the WVA did by walking users through a quiz that helps them match the anti-piracy features of the products they have, but without the web-based validation. For that we're pointing people directly to WGA," revealed Alex Kochis, a senior licensing manager on the WGA team.
